Chapter 33
Beth had watched the televised press conference while sitting with Faye and William Connor in their living room. The couple were clearly shocked to learn that she was going to take over Danielâs blog.
âI really donât think itâs a good idea,â Faye said. âYouâll have enough to cope with as it is. Itâll be too much.â
âIt will also be dangerous, Beth,â William said. âWhy take the risk? It doesnât make sense.â
âIt does to me,â Beth replied. âDanielâs blog was a big part of our lives. Heâd want me to keep it going.â
âNot if it means exposing you to the same people who killed him.â
âWe donât know who killed him,â Beth said. âBut even if it was because of his campaigns then it still wonât stop me.â
âBut youâre in shock,â William said. âYou shouldnât be making such big decisions. Give yourself time to grieve first.â
âI donât need time,â she said. âI know what Iâm doing.â
She wanted to tell them that she wasnât worried about the risks because she didnât care if she lived or died. But she knew they wouldnât understand. They still had lives that were worth living. She felt like hers was over.
Even Joseph joined the chorus of disapproval when he came up to the Connorsâ flat after returning from his business meeting.
âWhen I read the tweet I couldnât believe you were serious,â he said.
âWell, I am,â she told him. âSo please donât try to make me change my mind. It wonât happen.â
âBut itâs insane. Do you even know how to go about it?â
âOf course. I was involved from the start and I helped him put it together. We were a team.â
Red dots of rage appeared in front of her eyes suddenly. She knew that if she didnât leave the room she would either burst into tears or blurt out something sheâd regret.
So she jumped to her feet and rushed out of the room without another word. Thankfully the others had the good sense not to follow her. She slammed the door of the spare room behind her and threw herself onto the bed.
She lay without moving for several minutes, listening to the patter of rain against the window. Her head felt fuzzy, clotted with too many thoughts and distressing images. Among them, Danielâs battered body lying in a pool of blood.
Had nineteen hours already elapsed since he had died? Soon it would be a full day and night. Then a week. A month. A year.
She feared the future more than anything. She couldnât see how she would fill the time without Daniel. Or how she would cope with the aching loneliness, the endless nights, and the painful memories. At least managing the blog would give her something to focus on, a reason to get up in the mornings.
And if she too ended up dead like Daniel, then maybe that would be a blessed release.
